Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the local name for Victoria Falls is “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” which means “the smoke that thunders” in the Tonga language. The falls were formed some 100,000 years ago when the Zambezi River carved a deep valley, and the mist from Victoria Falls can now be seen from up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) away.
Victoria Falls is twice the height of Niagara Falls and more than twice the width. During the peak flow season from February to May, about 550,000 cubic meters (19,000,000 cubic feet) of water per minute flows over the falls.
