Stamvrug Overnight Hiking Trails. The Bateleur Nature Reserve in the Waterberg district offers a variety of hiking options. There are dedicated three-day Backpacking Trails and shorter Day Trails. These trails can be enjoyed either from the two base camps, or from any of the farmhouses and cottages. The Kloof Base Camp is situated in the gorge, and Stamvrug Base Camp is set in the hills leading to the upper plateau. The base camps offer excellent facilities. The farmhouses and cottages provide more luxurious accommodation. The Bateleur Nature Reserve caters for hikers with different levels of fitness and experience. Individuals within one group can hike different distances and trails of various grades of difficulty.
The Stamvrug Hiking Trail opened in May 1992. It was designed with the assistance of the Centre for Eco Tourism of the University of Pretoria. In 2001, the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve was granted international status by UNESCO. It now forms part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
