Wine Walks: Guided Walks & Drinking Wine!

Home / Travel Ideas / Wine Walks: Guided Walks & Drinking Wine!

What better place to offer us Wine Walks and guided wine drinking hikes, than the beautiful Western Cape! The Cape Winelands region is regarded as one of the most beautiful places in South Africa and now you can explore this beauty on foot… and wine. The Wine Walks are guided hiking routes that are designed to take you to selected wine farms so that you can enjoy the wine tasting options that each farm has to offer. Wine Walks generally cover distances of up to 50km over a period of about 5 days, which means you will have to walk about 10 – 15km each day consecutively for a few days. Most of these guided hiking packages include your meals and accommodation.

It is recommended that you bring along on your walk the following items: (1) tick repellent e.g. Bayticol or Tabard, (2) worn-in hiking boots or shoes, and socks, (3) light windcheater or rainwear, (4) small daypack, (5) swimwear, (6) sun-block, (7) walking stick, (8) camera and binoculars, (9) cash for ad hoc purchases during the walk. You should be moderately fit to do a Wine Walk. You could be expected to do a few sharp up and downhill sections and you will have to carry your own daypack with your personal items as well as your water.

Excelsior Manor Wine Walk

The Excelsior Wine Walk is an exciting three-day excursion with daily distances of between 8 to 14 kilometres. It stops off at half a dozen prominent wine estates and there are some non-wine related surprises along the way! Excelsior Manor is the starting and ending point for the 3 days. A full continental and cooked breakfast buffet and our gourmet 3 course dinners (including Excelsior wines) are served at the Manor House, whilst lunch is enjoyed at a venue along the route.

What should I bring?

  • Comfortable walking shoes (NO new shoes!)
  • Walking stick – if you like to walk with one – but the terrain is not too difficult (mostly farm roads) Suitable walking clothing, wind jacket and rain jacket (just in case!)
  • Small rucksack & water bottle (we provide fresh mountain water to fill bottles)
  • Hat, sunglasses, sunblock, mosquito repellent
  • Swimming costume (for the warmer weather!). Swimming towels are provided
